Edmonton Pickleball Club President's Report: 2018 Club Accomplishments

It was quite a first year at our new courts at Royal Gardens for the Edmonton Pickleball Club! Our membership grew from 275 in 2017 to 480 in 2018. Thanks to our many engaged volunteers, we were able to accomplish many things:

Developed, implemented and maintained court schedule:

  • ·       Ladder play for 2.0/2.5
  • ·       Interclub play for 3.0 and for 3.5.
  • ·       Ladder play for 3.0
  • ·       Ladder play for 3.5+ using TrackItHub
  • ·       Round Robin play according to ratings

Provided weekly orientation to pickleball classes at Royal Gardens and weekly orientations to pickleball classes and lessons at Westridge Wolf Willow Community League

Implemented use of Sign Up Genius for all skill levels and all members

Organized and subsidized skill development clinics for all levels and ratings clinics for players moving from 3.5 to 4.0

Planned and Hosted

  • ·       Grand Opening Gala Celebration and Social
  • ·       Battle of the Paddle sanctioned tournament with more than 220 participants
  • ·       National Pickleball Day Event
  • ·       Fall Social Celebration that raised $1240.00 that was donated to the ALS Society

Planned Ron Strank Memorial Charity Members’ Only Tournament, unfortunately foiled by weather

Employed a summer student for the entire summer, in cooperation with Canada Summer Student Job Grant and Royal Gardens Community League

Moved to online only membership registration

Moved to issuing memberships on an e-card basis, saving the club hundreds of dollars in postage

Purchased Pickleball Tutor machine and trained members to use it

Purchased court maintenance equipment and a storage shed

Built a spectacular patio area adjacent to courts

Worked with inapicklepals.com (Sean and Leslie) to offer indoor pickleball at B-Active

Secured indoor pickleball opportunities through City of Edmonton School Gym Rentals at St. Thomas Aquinas School and Elmwood Schools

Initiated discussions with Woodvale Community League to secure more outdoor playing space

Will run the “Edmonton PIckleball Club Winter Classic Tournament,” December 28, 29, 30; to be hosted by the Royal Glenora Club
