YOU MEET THE NICEST PEOPLE ON A PICKLEBALL COURT

 Newsletter - July 1, 2018.

Happy Canada Day Everyone,

I hope you are all enjoying this holiday weekend.

Last week, an EPC member said to me, “These courts are really rocking!” and indeed he was right!  His comment made me think about how far Edmonton Pickleball Club has come since the opening of the outdoor season.  Here is a list of some of our major undertakings and accomplishments…so far.

We have a full weekly court schedule at the Courts at Royal Gardens based on player ratings.

We have a partial court schedule at Westridge with lessons given by EPC members and Round Robins led by EPC members

We have happily on boarded Kareem Hamdon, our Summer Student, who joined us in May and will continue with us, on a shared basis with RGCL, until the end of the summer.

We hosted a moving Grand Opening of the Courts at Royal Gardens

We hosted a fantastic Club Social on the eve of the return of our Battle of the Paddle Tournament

We hosted a very successful four days of Battle of the Paddle Sanctioned Tournament with 224 players, spectators, thanks to many, many EPC volunteers who made it all happen.

We implemented the following:

     Orientation to Pickleball sessions

Use of Sign Up Genius for all sessions at Royal Gardens and at Westridge

Round Robins throughout the week according to player ratings

Ladder Pay for 2.0-2.5 and Ladder Play for 3.0 on Wednesdays

Inter Club Play for 3.0 on Fridays

Inter Club Play for 3.5 on Thursdays

Ladder Play on Track It Hub for 3.5 on Tuesdays – about to be expanded to include 4.0

Club Subsidized Skills Development for 2.0-2.5 by the Biggs Team

Club Subsidized Skills Development for 3.0 by Sean and Leslie

     Two 4.0 Ratings Sessions

     A Referee Clinic

     A Pop Up Event

     A continuing active website

A Facebook Closed Group for Edmonton Pickleball Club

We purchased a Pickleball Tutor machine for member use and ran a How to Use the Tutor Clinic.

We purchased court drying equipment for those odd wet and rainy days

We purchased an AED (defibrillator) and will shortly conduct training session for its use

That’s a pretty good start and it's no wonder our “courts are rocking”!

So, Now What? What’s next?

Well, we are now into the lazy, hazy days of summer and we predict that court utilization may slow down a little as players travel, host visitors from outside the region, go camping or go to the lake or simply loaf on the deck!  But it’s all good.

We don’t anticipate further major changes to the court schedules.  Now we should just play and enjoy our game and one another as the summer unfolds.

Friday Afternoon Play

We are going to continue to look for the magic formula to make Friday afternoon play the best experience possible for as many players as possible.  We know we can’t please everyone….but we will keep trying until we figure it out.

For this next week, we have continued to invite 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5-5.0 to Friday afternoon 1:00-3:00 play. Many tournament players will have departed for Nationals in Kelowna so we expect a smaller playing group and, although the SUG invites had already gone out as separate rated groups, all those signed up, regardless of rating, should expect to play together as one group.

Our court schedule is organized by player ratings and, as such, it does not offer many opportunities for intermingling of player ratings groups.  Friday afternoons, though, is one important opportunity to intermingle and learn from one another.  We should look to the Friday afternoon session as a social and recreational experience.

However, here is a proviso related to 3.5+ intermingled play – make sure you involve the better player in the rallies.  Don’t just hit balls to the weaker player.  The better player is more than a court decoration.  Hit the ball to the better player and, if you get it right back at you, well, you will have learned something, right?

Defibrillator  - AED

We have purchased and taken delivery of our Defibrillator AED and it is in the Sport Room every day during Kareem’s hours at the courts.

We are still working on how/who/when will train us in its use.  Any volunteers?  Any medical people out there?  Please contact me if you can help us out.  helen.thomson@shaw.ca

Kareem’s Hours

Kareem will be off on Monday July 2 – it is his day with pay as a result of the July 1 Stat Holiday.  Don’t worry – he’ll be back on Tuesday.

His hours will remain 9:00-3:00 until July 14 at which time his time will be shared by RGCL and he will be on site from 9:00-4:00.  We are lucky to have him and we are lucky to share his time with Royal Gardens Community League.

National Pickleball Day August 11

Plans are underway and we will keep you posted on the event.

A Fall Social

Again, plans are underway and we will keep you posted.  Stay tuned.  Based on our Grand Opening Social, we know EPC knows how to party!

eMembership Cards are Coming

We are going to convert to eMembership cards (ones you receive by email and you self print).  The City of Edmonton has confirmed that eMemberhsip cards are accepted by City of Edmonton facilities.

Cleaning Out the Large Shed

Don’t be surprised when you see Kareem haul used tires out of the shed and stack them behind the shed temporarily.  RGCL needs us to move the tires so they can clear out their stuff from our portion of the large shed.

Do I Need to Mention…Balls?

Please continue to be ever vigilant and put balls back in the bin/sleeve when you have finished play.  Don’t let them accidentally slip into your PB gear.

Looking Ahead to Next Year

Given our tremendous growth, 428 members today, we have begun to anticipate our needs for next year and we have begun planning for it.  More to come on that in the fall.

That’s all for now.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

Helen
