Hello Everyone,

I try to spare you the long emails but every now and then….

As of this morning, we have 407 members in EPC!  We welcome all our new members!

Our growth has been explosive this year and we have tried to keep ahead it by offering sessions and programs to meet the changing needs of our membership. That means our Court Schedule for the Courts at Royal Gardens has been and will continue to be “organic”.

Summer Courts Utilization

As we enter the summer months, the asphalt portion of our courts will at times be utilized by the youth programs for Royal Gardens Community League.  Basketball posts and hoops will be installed shortly and one tennis net will be removed altogether.  Our usage of the temporary nets courts will be impacted to some extent at certain times of the day.  This is not a surprise to us.  This is entirely within the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding which we have in place with RGCL.

Kareem Hamdon

I am very pleased to tell you that Kareem Hamdon, our summer student, will remain with us for the rest of the summer.  Although our Canada Summer Student Grant Program commitment with Kareem ends July 13, Royal Gardens Community League has graciously offered to cost share Kareem’s time until the end of the summer.  Kareem will be on site to manage both EPC and RGCL utilization.

Did I Say that the Court Schedule is Organic?

Wednesday morning 8:00-11:00 on June 20 will be a Skills Session for 2.0-2.5.  Sign up is on SignUpGenius (SUG).   A small fee is charged.

Friday morning 9:00-11:00 session for 3.5 and 4.0+ has been deleted and is replaced with a multi-use time slot which we will use for various special Skills Sessions beginning with the following special event for 2.0-2.5 players next week.

Friday morning 9:00-11:00 session on June 22 will be a Skills Session for 2.0-2.5 players.  Sign up is on SignUpGenius (SUG). Again, a small fee is charged.

These Skills Sessions for 2.0-2.5 players are excellent for indoor and outdoor players alike.  The sessions will be fun, non-threatening and you will learn lots.  And, of course, you will meet other players at your skill level!  Don’t be shy about attending.  Register on SUG and encourage your PB friends to also sign up for these sessions.

The Thursday evening 6:00-8:00 session for 3.5 has been expanded to 4.0+ players as well.  This will be a shared court session with 3.5 players on Courts 1,3,5,7,9 and 4.0+ players on Courts 2,4,6,8,10.  As our summer days heat up, more and more players will enjoy the cooler evenings!

Tuesdays from 1:00-3:30, beginning next Tuesday, will be 3.5 Ladder.  A detailed email to all 3.5 players has already gone out.  Patrick Wells, Barry Siwak and Kareem Hamdon are running the ladder.  Ken and I are providing “advice”,  if needed.

The Friday 3.5+ session at 1:00-3:00 has been the subject of lively debate.  To clarify, the session is for 3.5+ which means players at 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 are invited and encouraged to attend.  The Round Robin Draw Sheets are available and many players like to use them because it ensures a “mix” of players in the games with no one left out.  However, if you want to play only with your foursome, that choice is also available to you.

Balls Amnesty

We are losing an alarming number of balls.  We have substantial loss due to breakage and that is totally "the cost of business".  I get that.  However, sometimes players accidentally take club balls home.  Oops!  We all do it.  To help you out, I am announcing a "Balls Amnesty".  Check through your bags and PB stuff, look for balls marked EPC and please return them.  No questions asked. No scowls and no lecture.  Please, just quietly return them.

We have ordered a Defibrillator and will take delivery of it soon. Royal Gardens Community League is sharing its cost with EPC. Stay tuned for more information on its use, its accessible location and a CPR – AED training course as soon as we have worked out the details.

Pickleball Tutor is Available for Your Use

Thanks to Doug Thomson for providing a Pickleball Tutor Use Clinic last Wednesday evening.  Over 20 players attended.  The machine provides super practice possibilities but remember to “practice with a purpose”.  Please see the link below for Suggested Drills.

It is important that you follow all the operating instructions and understand the precautions you must take when using the Tutor.  Know that the Tutor can injure if not used properly!

Do not think to yourself, “I’m a handy guy…I can figure it out”.  You may well be handy but do not  ”try to figure it out” on your own.

Ask Kareem to help you the first few times.  The Tutor can injure if not used properly!

Tutor Access

When Kareem is on site, ( 9:00-3:00 Monday through Friday ) the Tutor will sit in the Tall Storage Shed.  Ask him to help you set it up on the most appropriate court for that day and time.  He will help you run it and show you what to do.

When Kareem is not on site, the Tutor will be stored inside the large storage shed under lock and key.

If you want to use it outside of Kareem’s hours, make prior arrangements with me or with Kareem to receive access codes and keys.

Have Paddle, Will Travel!

Our InterClub sessions fill up very quickly!  Parkland Pickleheads has now also joined in and is offering 3.0 and 3.5 InterClub play on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Sign up for their InterClub Play directly on their website.
