About the Edmonton Pickleball Club

Our Mission
To promote the playing of Pickleball to all people living in metro Edmonton, with a focus on active older adults, in order for them to achieve the health and wellness benefits associated with the sport.  Activities would include the provision of playing locations with scheduled times, lessons, tournaments and social events.
About the Club
After a formative six months of operation, the Edmonton Pickleball Club (“EPC”) was incorporated under the Societies Act of Alberta as a Non-Profit Organization on November 30, 2015.

KEN HURSHOWY ~ President

Ken has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Alberta. His early business career was focused on radio, television and newspaper advertising and promotion.  Next the Camelot Ice Cream Shoppes was a seven year event that saw the development and expansion of his concept into a franchise business.  Then came over 40 years of activity in Commercial Real Estate that included management of enclosed mall shopping centres then the construction and development of some retail and residential properties.  During most of this period Ken was licensed as a Real Estate Broker and Agent in Alberta and served for three years as a Director on the Edmonton Real Estate Board and was a member of the City of Edmonton Development Appeal Board. The later years of his career included real estate consulting for financial companies and investment firms but now his family and Pickleball has become his main interest.

 CAROLYN O’BRIEN ~ Vice-President

Carolyn is a retired teacher who has lived her whole life in Edmonton.  Her three degrees from the University of Alberta include a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education.  Carolyn has served on many Councils, Committees and Boards including; Parent Councils, Department Head responsibilities with Edmonton Catholic Schools, AISI Projects, The Edmonton Business Ladies’ Golf Association, Ladies President of Windermere Golf and Country Club and Board Member.  Currently she is also actively serving on the Alberta Attendance Board which works with students who are truant and their families.  After retiring from teaching, Carolyn taught for one year at the University of Alberta in Elementary Education.

 Sports have been a big part of Carolyn’s life, participating at competitive levels in four, including being a member of the Alberta Ladies Gold Team ~ many years ago!  She joined the Terwillegar Community Recreational Centre Pickleball Seniors group four years ago, and has enjoyed playing with and meeting the wonderful people who play there.  As well as sports, Carolyn enjoys her family, reading and travelling.

 BRUCE DUNCAN ~ Secretary

Bruce Duncan has over 50 years experience in professional planning in municipal governments in Canada and the United States.  After Graduating from the University of Toronto, Bruce worked for five years in Windsor, Ontario and was involved in urban renewal and annexation activities.  In 1969, he began working for the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii in various planning capacities.  After working for a private development firm, he returned to the City and County of Honolulu as Deputy Director of Land Utilization.

 In 1980, Bruce joined the City of Edmonton Planning Department and served as General Manager for 15 years.  From 2000 to early 2005, Bruce served as Manager of Intergovernmental Relations for the City of Edmonton, working with the federal and provincial governments, regional municipalities, and municipal associations. In 2004, Bruce was admitted to the College of Fellows of the Canadian Institute of Planners (FCIP). He presently provides planning services to municipal governments. 

 DOUG FOGG ~ Marketing

Doug graduated with a B. Comm. (Hons) degree from the University of Manitoba. His nearly forty year business career has been focused on commercial real estate, lastly as a partner with Cushman and Wakefield Edmonton. Doug was a key member on a national basis with both Cushman as well as Colliers Real Estate. Doug was a regular speaker and lecturer at U of A, ICSC, Real Estate Forum, BOMA, NASCA and other real estate related organizations.

On a community basis Doug Fogg was a founding member of the Woodvale Community League and on the board of directors of Little League in Millwoods. He also coached and managed both baseball and hockey in SE Edmonton.  Doug has been fortunate to play many competitive sports and believes Pickleball is the perfect sport for individuals to maintain a healthy active lifestyle and have a lot of fun playing!

 Glenn Vickers ~ Director at Large

Glenn Vickers is a retired Meteorologist who worked for 31 years with Environment Canada in various postings in Canada and Europe.  Sports have always been a major part of his life starting with lacrosse, hockey and soccer as a youngster, then acquiring a passion for golf after getting married.  Glenn has maintained a life-long love of playing and coaching hockey.  He graduated from the University of Victoria with a BSc in Honours Physics and an MSc in Meteorology from the University of Alberta.  After retirement, Glenn and his wife Lynne bought a modest home in sunny and warmer Arizona where they spend winters and have become avid Pickleball players.  Recognizing that the Pickleball facilities they currently enjoy in Edmonton don’t build, maintain or operate themselves, Glenn has volunteered to help with these endeavours.
